What’s New?

September 23 to October 6

Hello reader, and thank you for reading! We hope you are doing well. It feels like each time I write one of these there is a monumental shift in the world. Was Charlie Kirk already dead the last time I wrote one of these? No, right? I’m too lazy to go and check. Anyway, this week we are trudging along toward the release of RABBLE REVIEW No.9. I wrote a short blog post that I didn’t bother to share, since it just recapped everything you already know. But in case you did miss it, we unveiled the cover of RABBLE REVIEW No.9!

Coming soon to a phone near you

Do you love it? Be honest! Okay, thanks, I see you nodding ferociously, please relax the nodding I don’t want you to sprain your neck.

The cover is a photograph by Omar Lopez. He is also responsible for the excellent photo we used for our 7th issue. I mentioned briefly in my blog post that we usually don’t have this much runway in the leadup to an issue launch. But for Issue No.9 I wanted to make it a goal to build up hype and anticipation. I also wanted to slow the tide of, “where’s the issue?” emails from contributors. Also, also, we need deadlines to get things done in a timely fashion. Sure, we’re all busy people, but I wanted to establish some discipline so we could get the issue out in a timely fashion. The next newsletter is due right before the ninth issue launches, so I’m hoping we meet that deadline. Hopefully I have more to share from the actual issue as well.

Lastly, we announced last newsletter that we’re hiring. We are still accepting applications to join our editorial team. One thing I did not promote as much was our search for readers. Beginning with Issue No.10 I do want to have some readers help us go through the pile. This is a much more relaxed commitment as anyone becoming a reader would not be on the editorial team. If you want to help RABBLE REVIEW in that way then consider applying! Or you can give us money, that is a great way to support too.

Oh yeah, we have a (slightly) new trailer too:

We uploaded a new trailer that included the Issue No.9 cover. I don’t know how many literary journals make trailers for their issue release, but I like making them. I want the launch of a new issue to feel like an event. Because it is! Artists coming together with their collective work to say something, and share in that art is a beautiful thing. Plus, what good is submitting your work somewhere if they’re not excited to share it with the world? So I know it can seem corny, but I love doing it and I hope you’re just as excited as I am for this new issue!

Work(s) of the Week:

Samantha Whose Name I Never Learned” by Taylor Thornburg

This weeks we go back to Issue No.5 for Taylor Thornburg’s terrific short story. You can read it on page 6 of the fifth issue.

and…

“Smooth Whiskey” by David Estringel

Last week’s work was the excellent poem, “Smooth Whiskey by David Estringel. It was featured in our second issue. We liked it so much that one of our editors, Jer Hurdis, performed a reading for it. You can watch it below. Be sure to read the poem in its entirety in our second issue. It can be found on page 46.

Thanks for reading, reader. That’s all for now. Be sure to keep up with us on our social media. Stay safe out there. There are awful people trying to make the world more cold and unwelcoming, especially for those of us living in the margins. Be kind to one another. Also, COVID cases are rising, be safe and mask up if you can! I know we all hate it, but it’s the easiest way to mitigate the spread of this horrible illness. Again, thanks for reading. The next newsletter will be even closer to the launch of Issue No.9! Yay!
